A defence, a paper accepted, a workshop run, an award, a dataset released, a mention on the radio. Members are spread across a dozen countries, so most of this is only reported locally unless somebody submits it here.
Two sentences and a link is enough. A maintainer edits the wording before it is published.
Ways to send news
They all reach the same place. Only the GitHub form needs an account.
Telegram
Post in the channel
Start the message with /news and write it normally. The
first line becomes the headline, the rest the description, and any
link in the message is kept.
/news Amharic speech corpus released
40 hours of transcribed speech from four
regions, CC-BY.

Web form
Web form
A headline, a couple of sentences, and optionally a link and a date. Works on a phone, takes under a minute, and you do not need to sign in to anything.
A LinkedIn post is an acceptable link: paste the URL and the item will link to it.
GitHub
Open an issue
A structured form with fields for the date, the kind of thing, and who was involved. Best if you want to attach an image, drag it into the issue and we will use it.
ethionlp@googlegroups.com. A sentence in the body is enough.
What makes a good item
- Say what happened, not that something happened. "Forty students attended a two-day Amharic NLP tutorial at AAU" beats "we ran an event".
- Name the people, if they are happy to be named.
- Give a link if one exists, a paper, a dataset, a post, a news article. Any URL is fine.
- Old news is still news. Something from six months ago is worth adding.
News collected automatically
You do not need to submit conference participation. A weekly scan checks the events in a watched list for two things: a public programme page naming someone listed here, and a paper of ours published at that venue. Everyone found at one event is aggregated into a single draft.
That covers ACL, EMNLP, LREC-COLING, NAACL, SemEval, AfricaNLP, LT4All and the Deep Learning Indaba. Anything without a public programme page has to be submitted here.
